Guy Fawkes fireworks display for Monday
The sky above New Brighton will be lit with fireworks on Monday for Guy Fawkes night.
After a light show at 9pm, a fireworks display will start, choreographed to a soundtrack that will be played in a "listening zone" north of the pier.
Mayor Bob Parker said the display was a key event for Christchurch.
"We encourage people to bring their families and friends, but to please leave their own fireworks at home and be mindful of New Brighton's alcohol ban," he said.
"In past years, people have ventured up into the Port Hills to ensure a prime viewing spot, but with a number of Port Hills roads closed due to earthquake damage and rockfall risk, we're advising people to find a vantage point at ground level."
Several roads in the area, including Seaview Rd, the New Brighton Mall, Marine Pde, Owles Tce and Beresford St, will be partly or completely closed from 6pm.
People are advised to drive in early and park on nearby streets outside the road closures or to take the bus.
Additional buses on existing routes will run for the event.
Entry is by a gold-coin donation per vehicle.
