Josh Brolin and Jake Gyllenhaal will star in the movie of Christchurch climber Rob Hall's death on Mt Everest.

Australian Jason Clarke is reportedly being signed up to star as Hall.

Hall died on Everest in 1996 when guiding an expedition. He refused to leave United States amateur climber Doug Hansen, who suffered from breathing difficulties above the Hillary Step.

A blizzard hit, and both men died. In all, eight climbers died on the mountain during the fierce storm.

The events were written about by Jon Krakauer in Into Thin Air a book that was picked up by Hollywood.

US movie sites report that the film, by production company Working Title, will have Iceland's Baltasar Kormakur (The Deep, Contraband) directing.

Kormakur is said to be planning to start filming in Iceland in October.

The movie will focus on two expeditions battling the blizzard on Everest - one led by Hall and the other by Scott Fischer.

While Clarke is talked of as taking the part of Hall, Gyllenhaal is said to be set to play Fischer.

Brolin is in line to play a doctor named Beck Weathers, forced to spend a night on Everest, while John Hawkes will be cast as a slow climber who causes his team to be late setting out on their journey up the mountain.

Previously, Christian Bale was tipped to play Hall.
