A group of Christchurch retirement home residents bust out funky moves in front of surprised shoppers to show flash mobs are not just for young people.

Sixty-one residents from three of Ryman Healthcare's Christchurch villages yesterday entertained lunchtime shoppers at The Palms in Shirley with their energetic dancing.

The residents had a mean age of 78 and the oldest dancers were 92. The group practised for six weeks before yesterday's performance as part of Ryman's Triple A (Ageless, Active, Aware) classes.

Bob Nurse, 92, said the moves were "not that hard really. It's easy when you really enjoy it, and I do."

Ryman activities and lifestyle manager Nicki Brown said the performance showed it was never too late to take on a new physical challenge.

"There is a serious point to this though – the fitter at any age or stage, the healthier and happier you will be," she said
