Our pick: Shredded chicken taco at Mamacita's

The cheapest taco we've had in Christchurch ($5) definitely didn't skimp in portion size. But what struck us first was the bounty of colour in our paper parcel. Moist roasted chicken had been shredded and stuffed in a soft tortilla with punchy salsa verde and finely chopped tomato, red onion, coriander and sweetcorn, which was an inspired addition. A dose of lime sour cream sauce pulled it all together.

Chicken wrap at The Holy Grill

For just a blue note, the soft, warm wrap was very generously stuffed with tender and moist chargrilled chicken thigh, shredded iceberg lettuce, avocado, tomato, chimichurri (finely chopped herbs and oil) and red onion. The Brazilian-style chicken packed heat and the smooth, but airy, whipped avocado, which we discovered at the bottom, was a hidden treasure.

Banh mi at Street Food

Another blue-note lunch; this time a crispy baguette with a Vietnamese theme. For our protein filling, we skipped the coconut and chilli chicken, pulled pork or braised beef cheek, and opted for silken tofu. It was no bland tofu, either, smothered with tangy daikon and carrot paste and spiced with sliced chilli pepper and fresh coriander. And its remarkable foot-length meant there were leftovers for later.

Neptune's bounty at Red Box Burger and Grill

This high-spec truck is a permanent fix at Re:Start mall and has a menu full of burgers. Our fish burger was made fresh to order and the result was a soft and floury bap filled with strips of battered fish, red onion, lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce. The fish was deliciously flaky, the batter had great crunch, and the creamy tartar sauce was the perfect complement.

Chillidog at Loco's Texmex Cuisine

3.5/5 stars

The chillidog looked like the ultimate indulgence, and it was. A warm roll was the vessel for a frankfurter, pulled spicy beef and chilli beans. It was crammed full of tender meat and soft beans, and topped with a fresh dose of tomato, cucumber, red onion and sour cream. It was an easy-to-eat option, which was full of flavour, but ultimately lacked the promised spice.
