Looking for sustenance somewhere fascinators and fedoras won't stand out? We tested some brunch spots in readiness for Cup Week.

Eggs benedict at Holy Smoke, 650 Ferry Rd, Woolston - 4.5 stars

It comes as little surprise the place that smokes its own toppings wins the award for best eggs benedict in town. Two poached eggs on a homemade hash brown with spinach, hollandaise sauce and smoked bacon (or smoked salmon) well and truly hit the spot ($19). The classy interior suits frocks and fine-looking fellas.

Fruit French toast at Brigittes, 209 Papanui Rd, Merivale - 4  stars

It was the spiced fruit panettone that lifted Brigittes' French toast to another level. With bacon, macerated strawberries and lashings of maple syrup ($16.80), it's certainly a dish for a sweet tooth. Fancy hats might take up a bit of space in this little restaurant, but they would certainly look the part.

Rosti stack with bacon at Bean Scene, 359 Lincoln Rd, Addington - 3.5 stars

The rosti stack with bacon (or salmon) comes topped with two poached eggs and a drizzle of hollandaise sauce ($18). The potato rosti was a hit, although the eggs could have been runnier. We suspect this place will be humming during Cup Week.

Buttermilk pancakes at The Coffee House, 290 Montreal St - 3.5 stars

Two thick, fluffy pancakes flavoured with orange juice and zest form a stack, with bacon sandwiched between its layers. Slices of banana and maple syrup finish the classic combo ($16), which easily filled our diner. The setting is great and the coffee particularly good.

Pancakes at Trevinos, cnr Riccarton Rd and Mona Vale Ave, Riccarton - 3 stars

Pancakes, bacon, banana and maple syrup; it's a simple combination and it works well for this dish. Our diner was satisfied, although not wowed. However, the complimentary olives that kicked off the experience were a very nice touch and Trevinos is certainly a great pre-race destination.
