Avenues looks back at our favourite dishes from a year of eating and drinking in the city.

Best icecream (Feb): Mixed-berry chocolate icecream from The Greens, Parkview Gardens, 586 Harewood Rd

Frozen icecream or yoghurt melting down the side of a waffle cone screams summer, and this icy delight topped the lot.

Best DIY sandwich (March): Vic's Café, 132 Victoria St

Famous for its fresh breads, Vic's Café has the foundations of a good sandwich. Add a few fillings and it's easy to design your own masterpiece.

Best chocolate (April): She Chocolat, 79 Main Rd, Governors Bay

We're still talking about the decadent dates, and the velveteen butter ganache and salt made the trip over the hill even more worthwhile.

Best coffee (May): C4, 278 Tuam St

At C4 headquarters, industrial chic gets new meaning as you sip your coffee to the serenade of forklifts moving bags of coffee beans around the warehouse. It's coffee with character.

Best pizza (June): The Brewery, Cassels & Sons, Woolston

These wood-fired pizzas prove you don't have to pile ingredients sky high to get knock-out flavour. The Horotane lured us with its smoky bacon, blue cheese, thyme and pear toppings, and almost had us licking the plate.

Best winter dessert (July): Paddy's blackberry crumble at The West Coast Bar & Grill, 43 Main North Rd, Papanui

Paddy certainly knows how to make a delectable, fruit-filled crumble. Yum.

Best mobile eatery (August): Coq Au Van, Re:Start

A half-chicken platter with French fries and aioli easily became a favourite. This is flavoursome restaurant-quality rotisserie food on the go.

Best soul food café (September): The Herb Centre Café, 223 Kilmore St

This little green oasis on the edge of the city centre offers food that is both wholesome and tempting. Try the tortilla stack, or the brown-rice hunza pie - it's legendary.

Best burger (October): Billy Beef and Béarnaise burger at Burgers & Beers Inc, 355-357 Colombo St, Sydenham

From an extensive menu, we deemed this burger the best, as its sauces and bun pushed it to the top of the table, and the accompanying chips were superb.

Best Cup Week brunch (November): Eggs benedict at Holy Smoke, 650 Ferry Rd, Woolston

It came as little surprise the place that smokes its own toppings won the award for best eggs benedict in town. And the classy setting made that fascinator look even fancier.
