The owners of a new bar set to open in New Regent St hope the venue will provide some light relief for party-weary Christchurch residents.

The Last Word will be the second bar run by co-owners Jasper Bryant-Greene and T'Nealle Joie, who also own The Darkroom in St Asaph St.

Bryant-Greene said the pair had stumbled upon the chance to open the new bar.

''It was almost a coincidence really: we just came across an available lease in New Regent St and decided to take the opportunity.''

He said the bar would provide ''something quite different'' for patrons, with a more mellow environment compared to their late-night music venue and the city's other bars.

''There's very few bars around that you can go into late at night and not have people around you trying to party, and we know people are looking for a relaxed place to come to.''

The fit-out of the building would preserve its history and unique characteristics, such as a rimu staircase.

The pair were currently working with the Christchurch City Council to obtain a building consent, and hoped to open at the same time as the street on March 22.

Bryant-Greene said the new bar was partly funded by profits from The Darkroom, while shareholders who helped to get the St Asaph St bar operational had also ''come to the party'' for the latest project.
