Popular Irish bar The Bog reopens tonight, three years after it was closed by quake damage.

The former City Mall institution is reopening in Victoria St with a radical new look - a "steampunk" themed decor.

Owner Max Bremner said the aim was to make the bar appear as if a 200-year-old brewery had shut down for 100 years then reopened. It would look part-way through a renovation and restoration, with glimpses of its history.

Special effects company JBFX has done the fit-out with industrial bar leaners and a steampunk-style design.

Bremner said the bar was "quite radical" and would be considerably larger than its predecessor at 500 square metres.

It opens to the public at 7pm at 50 Victoria St, after a private party for former regulars.
