Strange's Building, in High St, will host the central city's first group of bars and restaurants.

Expected to open in late August. will be a new Vespa bar (ex-Poplar Lane), closely followed by Bohemian (ex-Oxford Tce), an Irish pub and a cafe.

Work to replace the four-storeyed Oamaru-stone building with three storeys of glass-fronted shop and office space started in July last year.


Macs has come home from the 21st Australian International Beer Awards with two trophies and five medals.

Mac's Gold won the Trophy for Best Australian Style Lager and Hop Rocker scored a Trophy for Best Other Pilsner.

Both also won a gold medal along with Mac's Springtide for Low Carbohydrate Lager - Packaged.

Mac's Great White won a silver medal in the Belgian Wit - Packaged category, and Mac's Shady Pale won a bronze medal for Australian Style Pale - Packaged.


New Zealand's largest culinary festival, Wellington On a Plate, starts on Friday, August 9 and runs for 17 days, with night markets and day trips, dumplings and degustations.

Tip Top's Crammed Jammin' Cream Donut icecream has won Best Ice Cream at the International Ice Cream Consortium conference.

It won numerous awards at the New Zealand Ice Cream Awards.

Wanaka-based Pure New Zealand Ice Cream won two silvers for its kaffir, lime and ginger, and vanilla flavours.
