I have found a cafe that I don't want to tell you about, because it's excellent and I would like to keep it secret.
But for the greater good, I will just say, next time you are in Addington, visit Mosaic by Simo.
The exciting thing about post-quake Christchurch is the unexpected finds in unexpected places.
Mosaic by Simo is like that.
It's tucked away in a shopping centre off Lincoln Rd, with a less than exciting outlook of the centre's car park.
Don't let the boring location fool you, once you step inside you'll find an authentic Moroccan deli, coffee shop and takeaway.
I visited Mosaic on a Thursday morning.
Simo's doesn't have a breakfast menu, but offers freshly prepared Middle-Eastern styled food and a basic blackboard menu in the morning. The cafe was busy with ladies who brunch, as well as blue collar fellas picking up a morning snack from the deli.
I ordered a chilli falafel wrap and a Moroccan mint tea, and sat in the cafe's side room.
Tagine casserole crockery is on display and Middle-Eastern lamps furnish the simple cafe.
The spicy wrap was packed with cabbage, onion, carrot and flavour, and was completely delicious although I was surprised it arrived on a plate wrapped in a plastic bag.
The display unit offers Moroccan delicacies such as vine-leaf wrapped dolmades, briouats or filo parcels (they include prawns, fresh chilli and coriander) and like the mezze everything looks amazing.
Once upon a time I lived in the Middle East and Mosaic was a pleasant reminder of that life. Even breakfasting alone as I was took me back to my Arabian travelling days.
They just need to add shisha to the menu and I will be completely content.
The food is incredibly cheap. The staff are friendly and helpful. I can't recommend it enough.
Just don't tell anyone else about it, OK?
Mosaic by Simo is open 9am to 9pm, Monday to Saturday. 3/300 Lincoln Rd. See simos.co.nz.
