The first in a series of coffee reviews by espresso expert Abbie Napier.
Ed Hopper obviously takes pride in its coffee.
The machine is clean and delivery prompt. The long black lacked an enticing crema (dense caramel coloured head), but was not over- extracted. Therefore, when the coffee shot hit the hot water in the cup, the water was too hot and the coffee oil split.
It made up for appearances with an earthy, sweet smell and a rounded caramel flavour, only very slightly bitter.
The flat white tasted the same (flavour consistency is always good), but the milk had boiled slightly, giving a grainy, bubbly milk texture; 30 seconds less steam would fix this.
For a flat white it was a bit too foamy, and, (though opinions on this vary) I believe a flat white should always be served in a tulip cup, which it was not.
Overall, a good place for a coffee, and I would go back.
