500 free tickets to Christchurch's fun run
Hundreds of free entries to Christchurch's Summer Starter fun run are being offered to a quake-weary community.
A total of 500 free entries to the ASB Summer Starter is on offer as organisers seek to bring light relief to the community in the wake of the magnitude-7.8 quake.
Free entry will go to the first 500 to enter the event using the code FUNINTHESUN. For those who have already entered and paid for the Sunday, November 27 event, organisers hope they can use the free ticket offer to encourage friends and family to take part.
The event organisers are also hoping to splash more colour back into the city by encouraging the crowds of walkers and runners to dress in outrageous outfits for the 10km or 4km event.
The 10km route begins at New Brighton Pier with thousands of competitors then running or walking y the scenic coastal route to Redcliffs, joined by the 4km entrants at Woolston's Ti Rakau Reserve.
The ASB Summer Starter was used by many Cantabrians as a way to kickstart their summer fitness.
People were encouraged to challenge themselves to run, walk or dance their way to the finish line.
Over 5500 runners took part in 2015, along with 130 dogs. For the first time, dogs will be able to join their owners for the full 10km route.
Fairfax national events manager Brett McMeekin said he hoped numbers would increase each year.
"Our ultimate aim is for this event to be 10,000 people.
"All ages, all races, all shapes and sizes come to celebrate Christchurch, as well as giving them the ability to give back to the community," McMeekin said.
There will also be prizes for best-dressed people and pets. Last year, dogs sporting hula skirts, leis and a Santa hat roamed the course.
