The Harewood Community Centre building was closed by the city council today following a detailed engineering assessment showing its seismic capacity to be only 6 per cent of the new building standard.

The Harewood Rd building is used by Harewood Playcentre and a number of community groups.

Although the building had relatively minor structural damage, a potential critical structural weakness was identified which needed further investigation.

The age of the building, construction materials and the type of construction had contributed to its low ability to withstand an earthquake.

All council-owned buildings assessed below 34 per cent of the building code are closed.

Detailed post-quake engineering assessments of its buildings are being carried out as part of council's facilities rebuild plan project.
