Rocks above Captain Thomas Track in Sumner will be cleared in the next section of remediation which begins tomorrow.

The job should be finished mid-February.

The track has been closed since the quakes and will remain closed during the works.

The public is advised to stay clear due to the high risk of rockfall and associated work environment involving drilling and explosives.

Contract project manager Calum McLean said a small specialised geotech tream was working down from the top of the track in sections.

Disruption to affected residents and walkers and mountain bikers on adjacent tracks would be minimised.

Daily signage would be posted at trail heads to advise the public of the work.
