A police area commander has been appointed to the newly-created Christchurch metro area.
Superintendent Andy McGregor has been appointed to the position under the new Canterbury police district structure.
McGregor is currently the national manager of Police Communications Centres, based in Wellington.
He has previously been an area commander in Christchurch, at the northern and southern areas.
McGregor was also based in Christchurch following the February 2011 earthquake, as officer in charge of the operation earthquake police response.
In the new role McGregor will have responsibility for the area response, investigations and prevention functions in the new Christchurch metro area.
This includes the greater Christchurch area currently covered by the Christchurch central, southern and northern areas.
The new district structure is expected to be in place by the end of this year.
