Police allege a man who was already on bail for shoplifting, continued his offending with a raid on a Christchurch sex shop.
They have charged Christopher John Francis Kennedy, 43, of Phillipstown, with shoplifting a $69 schoolgirl uniform from the Peaches and Cream adult shop in Colombo Street yesterday.
He also appeared in the Christchurch District Court today on a charge of stealing $45 of freeze-dried food from a supermarket at South City, nearby.
Police prosecutor Bronwen Skea told Judge Emma Smith that Kennedy had been on bail on another shoplifting charge after a court appearance on January 14.
After that, he was charged with stealing drinks at the Re:Start Mall, and wine from Ballantynes, and the two offences yesterday.
She alleged he tried to steal items from shops by stuffing them down the front of his trousers. She opposed his release on bail.
Duty lawyer Norm Farquhar said Kennedy did not seek bail.
The man consented to a remand in custody, so that legal aid could be granted, although he was concerned about losing his job and his possessions. He has entered no pleas.
Judge Smith remanded Kennedy in custody to January 29.
