A man was taken into police custody after a car smashed into an bridge over the Manakau railway station, 12km south of Levin, early today.

The crash happened at 12.40am and the driver fled on foot.

Sergeant Dave Pike of Levin police said that a man had since been taken into custody.

"The man was breath-tested and taken to Levin police station where he blew a positive result of 571mcg of alcohol.

"His vehicle was pretty much destroyed."

The man was then sent home but charges were likely, Mr Pike said.
