A truck driver is trapped with moderate injuries after his vehicle rolled, blocking a railway line in Canterbury.

Police said the truck was straddling the railway line on State Highway 1 in Dunsandel at the intersection with Selwyn Lake Rd.

The highway was blocked, with a detour in place and officers directing traffic.

A police spokesman said they were alerted to the accident about 7.45am.

He said KiwiRail had been notified to alert train drivers.

A Fire Service spokesman understood it was a truck carrying bales of wool.

Ambulance and fire crews from Dunsandel and Burnham were at the scene.

South-bound traffic had been directed to turn left into Selwyn Lake Rd, into Boundary Creek Rd and back onto SH1. North-bound traffic could turn right into Boundary Creek Rd, into Selwyn Lake rd and back onto SH1.

Motorists are asked to take care in the area and be patient going through the detour, police said.
