A fire at an Auckland council building last night required 10 fire engines to be extinguished

The blaze broke out in a ceiling cavity on the Greys Avenue property just after 5pm  yesterday, fire service spokesman Jaron Phillips said.

Smoke was first seen coming from the vents on the eight floor, and fire officers arrived soon after to confirm the blaze.

The building, which is 12 stories tall, had been completely evacuated while the flames were extinguished.

Phillips said there were no reports of injuries.
