The police dive squad will be called in to search for a man who was seen jumping from a wharf in Auckland this morning.

Members of the public saw the male remove his shoes and shirt before jumping into the water on the eastern side of Princes Wharf at 5am this morning.

He was last seen swimming under the wharf, police said.

Police staff and the Police Maritime Unit searched the area but were unable to locate him.

Police are concerned for his welfare and have called the dive squad in to assist with the search.

The male was described as being Caucasian, approximately 186 cm tall, medium build, with frizzy hair that was 15-20cm long.

Anyone with information that could assist the police in identifying the male or confirming that he is safe, are asked to urgently contact the Auckland Police Maritime unit on 302 6400.
