An 18-year-old who was killed in a head-on crash involving a stolen vehicle in Katikati last night has been named as James Dean Miles, from Huntly.

Miles was killed when the stolen Hyundai Accent he was driving sped off, away from police, and collided with another vehicle.

The driver of the other car, a 54-year-old Waihi man, suffered moderate injuries and was in a stable condition in Tauranga Hospital, police said.

No one else was in either of the vehicles.

Police said last night that it appeared the stolen car was being followed by police when it ''suddenly sped away out of sight'' then collided with an on-coming vehicle on State Highway 2, near the Bay of Plenty township of Katikati, about 5pm.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the vehicle prior to the collision. Anyone with information is asked to call Tauranga Police on 07 577 4300.
