Police are appealing for information after a 9-year-old boy was found in a "distressed" state in Timaru.

The boy, who was wearing an Oceanview Heights School uniform, was found yesterday near Holme Station Bridge and had "some visible injuries", police said.

The injuries were not life-threatening and he was taken to Timaru Hospital.

Timaru Police said they were trying to work out his movements from when he left the primary school about 3.15pm until he was found.

The boy was wearing a dark blue polar fleece, dark blue shorts and a teal green polo shirt.

He is described as being dark in complexion, of slim build, about 30 kilograms and with dark hair. He is considered small for his age and his height is similar to that of a 6 or 7-year-old.

Police have not yet been able to speak to the boy, but they hoped to talk to anyone who had any information about the boy's movements, including sightings of any vehicles parked near Holme Station Bridge yesterday afternoon or any suspicious activity near Oceanview Heights School and the intersection of Selwyn and Hobbs streets.
