Two Christ's College pupils caught a would-be burglar in a fast-paced citizens arrest.

The pair stopped and held a 26-year-old man as he tried to flee the school on Sunday night.

It is alleged he tried to break into the Rolleston Ave school and steal equipment.

Christchurch central area commander Derek Erasmus said police were called to the school about 9.40pm by a boarder.

The pair had spotted the man acting suspiciously inside school grounds.

As he fled, they chased him down Rolleston Ave to the corner of Gloucester St, where they held him until police arrived.

He was arrested at the scene and later charged with with burglary and two counts of breaching his release conditions.

Erasmus said police were impressed by the pupils.

''It was great work by all those involved,'' he said.

''Not only have they called the police, they have gone on and caught the offender.''

Headmaster Simon Leese said the pupils had been ''commended'' for their ''splendid'' job.

Police had also written to the school commending the pair.

Erasmus advised others who come across criminal activity to exercise cation.

''We always advise caution. While we want the public to catch burglars there is always the potential for someone to get hurt or injured.''

The man was remanded in custody following an appearance in the Christchurch District Court yesterday  and will appear before court next month.
