A truck has rolled on State Highway One in Kaikoura and oil is leaking into the sea, police say.

The Foodstuffs truck rolled on SH1 in Peketa, Kaikoura, just before 6am, police north communications shift commander Paul Reeves said.

"Oil is pouring out of the trailer unit into the sea," Reeves said.

The driver, who was the sole occupant, was unharmed.

Police and a Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit were heading to the scene and had alerted the Department of Conservation and Kaikoura Council.
