Sex offending teacher jailed longer

A former Rotorua deputy principal already in jail for sexually interfering with young male pupils has had another two years added to his sentence.

In the Rotorua District Court yesterday Judge Chris McGuire jailed Glen Rohan Lovatt, 48, on one charge of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and two of doing an indecent act on a boy under 12.

The charges date back 16 years, to a period between January 1 and December 31, 1996, when Lovatt was deputy principal at Rotorua's Selwyn Primary School.

Late last year a jury found him guilty of similar charges and he was jailed for four years and three months.

Yesterday he was given two years on the violation charge and a year for the remaining charges. These were to be served concurrently - but added on the time he was already imprisoned for.

When the charges were put to him yesterday Lovatt entered guilty pleas through his lawyer, who did not make submissions on the ex-teacher's behalf.
