A scrub fire that threatened homes next to Auckland's Mt Wellington Domain has been brought under control.

Fire crews were alerted to the blaze on the volcanic cone at 4pm.

About 250 square metres of scrub was burnt in the blaze, the Northern Fire communications shift manager said.

Earlier, the spokesman said winds had been pushing the fire towards houses.
