A 28-year-old Gisborne man was arrested for assault on Saturday night after he broke a police officer's nose.

The alcohol-fuelled incident happened at about 3am at a party on Stout St.

When police arrived at the small gathering, a number of party-goers became hostile, sergeant Jo Chalmers said.

As officers arrested a 28-year-old female for obstruction, her partner assaulted the male officer, breaking his nose.

Both the man and his partner were arrested.

Ms Chalmers said it was disappointing that police regularly faced alcohol-fuelled hostility when they were just trying to do their job.

Police are asking members of the public to contact them if they saw a male riding a motorcycle without a helmet in the area, around the time of the incident.

The officer was taken to Gisborne hospital, were he was treated and held for observation for four hours.
