Police say they are not ruling out homicide after a woman's body was found in Ashburton today.

The woman was found in a house on Cass St and is believed to be a local. She has not yet been identified.

Ashburton Detective Senior Sergeant John Ray said officers had been speaking to people in the area and were examining the scene.

Homicide had had not been "ruled out", he said.

"We still have some way to go before we can determine what happened."

An autopsy would be held next week.
