One person is dead and six others injured after a three-car collision in the lower North Island this evening.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash between Levin and Shannon at the intersection of Waihou Rd and State Highway 57 about 5.10pm.

An ambulance communications spokeswoman said one person was dead while another six people were injured in the crash.

A rescue helicopter transported one critically injured patient to hospital.

A police spokesman earlier said four cars collided, but the number was revised to three. One had rolled and there were reports a person was trapped inside, the spokesman said.

Diversions are in place while the serious crash unit investigates.
