Power has been restored to customers on the East Coast, after a major outage this morning.

Large parts of Napier, Gisborne and Wairoa were without electricity for more than two hours when power was cut just before 10am.

Transpower said in a statement the power was lost because of a major transformer fault at Redclyffe substation.

An unrelated power outage also occurred in Taupo for about 20 minutes.

A spokeswoman for Muirs Bookshop and Cafe in Gisborne said the power outage was an "extremely annoying" disruption to a busy morning of trading.

"We can't do any of the back receiving stock, and as far as trading goes we have a cafe upstairs as well, with no coffee of course," she said.

"Since it's happened, we've had about a dozen customers. It was becoming reasonably busy, it was winding up at that point of the morning and they have phone orders for takeaways for local businesses."

She said the cafe was emptied by the cut.
