A violent Patea party turned even nastier when one party-goer sliced a woman's throat to stop two other women fighting.

His victim bled profusely after suffering a seven centimetre cut to her neck before police arrived to restore the peace and get her medical attention.

In the District Court in New Plymouth yesterday, Jared Glen Rudolph, 29, pleaded guilty to two charges stemming from his actions on May 18, that he wounded Rahera Katene with intent to cause her grievous bodily harm, and assaulted his wife, Phillipa Rudolph.

On the day of the incident, Rudolph denied to the police that anything happened and his wife would not speak to police.

On the kitchen table in a plastic bag investigating police discovered a bloody black-handled butterfly-style knife.

The police summary of facts states that family members, including Mrs Rudolph and her four children, gathered at the Patea house where they were drinking alcohol during the afternoon and continued into the evening.

The brawling began when the defendant Rudolph fought with another man who then left the house.

Feelings escalated and soon after Rudolph's wife and another woman began fighting, and pulling each other's hair while others shouted at them to stop.

Rudolph grabbed Ms Katene around the neck and held a knife to her throat yelling at the woman who was fighting with his wife to let her go or he was "going to cut Rahera".

He then carried out his threat, causing Ms Katene's neck to bleed profusely. The women stopped fighting.

Rudolph let go of his victim, who ran out of the house. She suffered a seven centimetre laceration to the right side of her neck which needed medical attention.

Other family members arrived to help and police were called.

The police arrived as Rudolph and his wife were yelling at one another in the kitchen.

He grabbed her around the neck and punched her in the shoulder.

But Rudolph's wife would not talk to the police and it is unknown whether she suffered any injuries from her husband's actions, the summary states.

Judge Mike Behrens jailed Rudolph for four years.
