Neighbours of an Auckland property ransacked during a home invasion this week have described how a woman living at the address fell backwards from a window and was caught by a man she lived with.

The pair, who police say won't return to the address, were confronted by two men at their rented Seymour St property in Herne Bay about 6pm on Wednesday.

The man was injured during the incident but escaped from the house.

A neighbour said the woman then fell backwards from the first floor window and was caught by the man, before they ran up the street pursued by the intruders.

The offenders left the scene in a vehicle after ransacking the property.

The man is understood to have been treated at Auckland City Hospital but wasn't admitted as a patient.

Police have completed a scene examination at the house, a spokeswoman said, and an armed officer guarded the scene last night.

Both victims had since spoken with police but declined to say what happened, she said, but have told police they won't return to the property.

It is not known if the pair were a couple or flatmates.

Since they moved into the home around 10 months ago a number of strange things began happening, neighbours claimed.

People had been turning up at all times of night and things had been going missing from the neighbourhood, Herne Bay residents said.

"It hasn't been comfortable since they arrived, there have been lots of lowlifes around," said a neighbour who refused to be named.

A family living next door said they had met the couple a few times and they had seen nothing out of the ordinary, until yesterday.

"This is a quiet, nice neighbourhood usually."
