Armed robbers targeted a New Plymouth bar as staff were closing up early this morning.

Two offenders wearing dark clothes and helmets entered Treehouse, a licensed bar on Devon Street, with a gun about 1.15am, Detective Sergeant Brent Matuku said.

The bar had shut at midnight and staff were cleaning when the offenders entered the bar.

Staff were forced to hand over a sum of cash and the offenders escaped on a motorbike, travelling west on Devon Street West towards the Blagdon Shops.

''Fortunately there has been no physical injury suffered by staff but they have been severely traumatised by the incident,'' Matuku said.

Police want to hear from anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area. Members of the public can contact the New Plymouth Police on 06 7599456.
