A 30-year-old man was shot early this morning just south of Blenheim.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said they were called to Redwood Pass Rd at 4.40am by the victim, who had been shot in the thigh.

The man was treated at the scene before being transferred to Wairau Hospital, in Blenheim, for surgery.

Detective Sergeant Jason Hillgrove, of Blenheim police, said St John notified police of the shooting about 5am.

Officers who arrived found the man sitting in his car with a gunshot wound to his leg.

Hillgrove said police did not yet know the type and calibre of gun the man had been shot with.

They were continuing their Investigations.
