A Hamilton woman managed to scare off an attacker in a carpark yesterday.

The 54-year old woman was heading to her car in the Pembroke Street car park opposite Waikato Hospital's emergency department yesterday afternoon.

She did "everything right" when she noticed she was under threat, said Detective Sergeant Daryl Smith.

"The woman screamed for help and managed to break free from her attacker, running towards amember of the public to raise the alarm," he said.

"The offender fled the car park and crossed the road into the hospital grounds."

Hospital staff alerted police and were able to give good quality security camera images.

"This morning police went to a Deanwell address where we arrested an 18-year-old man who is currently being interviewed about yesterday's incident."

Smith said if anyone found themselves in a similar situation, they should make as much noise as possible.
