A woman was seriously hurt after a car smashed through a fence and struck a house in Paraparaumu on the Kapiti Coast.

The accident happened about 9.30pm last night at the corner of Guildford Drive and Beachwater Grove.

The woman, in her 20s, was initially trapped in the wreckage of the silver Toyota, a Wellington Free Ambulance spokeswoman said.

The accident victim was flown to Wellington Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
