Police are appealing to the public to help locate Leighton Kelly Grant, who was last seen in Taupo on Friday.

Grant, 35, left Taupo in his mother's car, a Suzuki Vitara, on Friday and was due back the following day at 6pm.

His mother reported him missing after he failed to return, senior constable Barry Shepherd said.

Grant had been living in Auckland but had spent a week in Taupo before he drove off on Friday, Shepherd said.

"There's nothing sinister or suspicious about it. He's gone away in his mother's car, with her permission, and never returned."

It was thought Grant was heading to the Tongariro National Park but that was not confirmed and he could be anywhere, Shepherd said.

Police wanted the public to help locate Grant and the car and report any sightings of the white Suzuki, registration FTN631, on 111.
