A 16-year-old allegedly tried to cut a man's throat with a small samurai sword in an attack in Matatoki on Monday night.

A 23-year-old man suffered a "serious" wound to his neck, which is understood to be the result of the sword attack following a dispute with the teen. The boy was remanded in Child Youth and Family custody following an appearance in the Youth Court yesterday.

The man was recovering in Waikato Hospital's high dependency unit last night.

Thames sub-area manager, Senior Sergeant Graham Shields, said emergency services were called to an address about 5pm yesterday. The youth, who was known to the man, was arrested in Thames later that night.

Mr Shields said they were not treating it as domestic related. Police would like to speak with any witnesses.
