A man who kicked his way out of an interview room at the Lower Hutt District Court before waiting for a court staff member to use a security card to leave the building has been jailed for five months.

Matthew Kidman had pleaded guilty to escaping by kicking out glass in an interview room on August 2 last year.

He then waited in a secure area until a staff member unwittingly swiped him out, then took a taxi to the suburb of Naenae, the court was told.

His escape sparked a manhunt in Lower Hutt before he was stopped in a car in central Wellington later that night.

Kidman had two previous convictions for escaping in 2001 and 2004 but told the court he thought one of those was more of an attempt.

Wellington District Court judge Mike Behrens QC, said Kidman was only out a brief time but his previous convictions had to be taken into account.

Kidman has been in custody since escaping and Crown lawyer Jodie Ongley said he had effectively served his time already.
