Four hospitalised after Waikato road crash

CRASH SCENE: A four-wheel drive struck a power pole on State Highway 27 in the Waikato,throwing one passenger from the vehicle, with all four occupants sent to Waikato Hospital.

Four people have been injured in a serious crash which has closed one lane of a major Waikato road this morning.

Inspector Andrew Brill from Police Northern communications said emergency services were called to a vehicle which had crashed into a power pole and into a paddock on State Highway 27 near the intersection of Horrell Road just before 6.30am.

Brill said one person was thrown from the vehicle in the crash. Four people were taken to Waikato Hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

"The road is down to one lane and we advise caution for motorists," Brill said.

Meanwhile, two people were flown to Auckland Hospital with serious injuries last night after their car rolled, landing on the beach at Matarangi.

The incident happened just after 11pm. Northern fire communications team manager Tania Matthews said firefighters were involved in removing the car from the beach.

In Hamilton, one person was treated at the scene of a crash on Avalon Dr after losing control of their vehicle and crashing into a light pole.

The incident happened just after 4am.
