Labour MP Charles Chauvel has announced his resignation from Parliament.

He will take up a position with the United Nations in New York.

His new role is as an adviser on Parliamentary Development and Democratic Governance.

His resignation is effective from March 11.

He is a list MP, meaning Carol Beaumont is next in line to enter Parliament.

Labour Leader David Shearer said he had accepted Chauvel's resignation.

"Charles is a talented and dedicated MP who has made a huge contribution to the Labour team. He will be missed," he said.

"We thank him for his commitment to standing up for New Zealanders and for working to make people's lives better.

''Charles has played an important role within the Labour team. He has chaired a number of select committees and represented Labour in many portfolio areas since 2006, including most recently as shadow attorney-general and spokesperson for Justice and Arts, Culture and Heritage.

"We wish Charles well with his new role. He will do New Zealand proud in this international assignment," Shearer said.

Beaumont said she was looking forward to returning to Parliament and expected to start the week Chauvel leaves.

"Absolutely, really looking forward to coming back."
