Gareth Morgan has withdrawn his bounty for euthanased cats, preferring instead to sponsor Wellington's wildlife haven, Zealandia.

In a blog post yesterday, Dr Morgan said that the SPCA's "decision to sacrifice New Zealand's native fauna in some misguided attempt to ‘save lives' of stray cats" meant they were not worthy of his $5-a-cat bounty.

"Because of this intransigence and refusal to reverse their policy of supporting stray cats, I have withdrawn the $5 bounty . . . and instead will offer to Zealandia funding to rent cat traps to the people of Karori so we can enhance the halo around this very special ecological initiative."
