A knife-weilding man is on the run from police after attempting to rob a liquor store in Christchurch.

The would-be robber man attempted to enter Henry's Beer, Wine & Spirits outlet in Marshland Rd, in Shirley, just after 10pm on Friday night.

Detective Sergeant Grant Collins said an employee was able to push the offender out of the door and lock it.

The offender then left the area on a bicycle, travelling south on Marshland Road. No one was injured and no cash was taken.

Police attended and set up cordons but the offender was not located.

The man is described as a Maori, aged in his 30s, about 178cm (5ft 10in) tall and of slim build. He was wearing orange high-visibility trousers.

Police are calling for any sightings of suspicious activity, or of a man matching the description in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Christchurch police on (03) 3637400. Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Opinion poll

Is the mayor correct to put libraries, pools and community facilities ahead of the Town Hall?

Absolutely, they're far more important

I think funds should be split between those facilities and the town hall

No, the Town Hall should be rebuilt first

Just demolish the Town Hall completely instead of rebuilding
