Two Christchurch brothers endured a cold night to be "first on the chair" at Mt Hutt today.

Ben Yorston, 17, and 14-year-old Simon Yorston slept at the bottom of the Summit six-seater chairlift to reserve their coveted spots.

Ski area manager James McKenzie said the brothers were awarded free T-shirts for their efforts.

"They slept in the lift hut. That is dedication for you," he said.

McKenzie said the Yorstons were among 700 people at Mt Hutt's opening day.

It was an "excellent" start to the season, he said, "and the weather is looking great for the weekend".

There was 45cm of snow at the top of the mountain and 35cm at the base.
