Four injured in crash near Geraldine

At least four people have been seriously injured in a crash near Geraldine, South Canterbury, tonight.

A police spokesman said two cars collided on the Winchester-Geraldine Rd, south of Geraldine, about 7.30pm.

There were seven occupants in total in the cars, he said.

"We're treating it as a very serious accident, with very serious injuries involved," he said. 

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter had airlifted one patient, who had "taken quite a while to be extricated from the vehicle", to hospital.

A second patient, with minor injuries, was also taken in the helicopter, St John Ambulance spokesperson said.

A Fire Service spokesman said three fire engines attended the crash scene, and one occupant had to be cut from a vehicle using the jaws of life.

All seven patients were taken to Timaru Hospital, the ambulance spokesman said.

"By road, we've taken one serious and four other patients, which are ranging from minor to moderate injuries."


The Serious Crash Unit and it was still too soon to tell whether speed or alcohol has been involved, police said.
