A man has been arrested over an alleged attack on a woman at a Christchurch gang pad.

Members of public found a woman distressed and injured on the corner of Main North Rd and Vagues Rd about 6.30am today, police said.

They stopped and helped and notified emergency services.

The woman told police she had been strangled until she was unconscious at a known gang address in Papanui.

A 49-year-old man will appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow charged with assault with intent to injure.

The attack may have been sexually-motivated, police said.

The woman was receiving medical care.
