Kiwi beaches are making waves around the world again.
Karekare in West Auckland has been ranked No. 38 on a list of the world's best 100 beaches by cnn.com.
Kaiteriteri Beach, the beach beloved by South Islanders came in at No. 68 followed by Hot Water Beach, Coromandel Peninsula at No. 94.
CNN.com is the third most popular news site in the world, with an estimated 95 million unique monthly visitors, according to Alexa.com.
That audience makes the ranking a significant one but it is hardly the first time our beaches have hit the headlines.
Rob Guild, the manager of the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve, said the list he hears about the most is one published by The Guardian newspaper in 2003, when Kaiteriteri joined two Carribean beaches, an Irish beach and one on the East African archipelago of the Seychelles as the five best beaches in the world.
Guild said Kaiteriteri's appeal rested on its crescent shape, the fact that it was the "first golden sand beach on the Abel Tasman coastline" and the "wow factor" of coming down the windy access road through pine forest to see the beach unfurl in front of tourists.
CNN said Kaiteriteri had "golden sand and the most sunshine hours in New Zealand".
The highlights for Karekare included its popular "annual beach race day, in which local ponies and horses race to raise money for charity."
CNN also said a highlight of Hot Water Beach was the "ad hoc spas" that could be created in the warm sand at low tide.
