Crash victim undergoes surgery

A man rushed to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition following a head-on collision with a truck underwent surgery last night.

Police say the man was driving a 4WD vehicle along Marshlands Rd, between Prestons Rd and Hawkins Rd, in a 30kmh road works area when the crash occurred last night.

He was trapped in the vehicle and had to be cut out by firefighters.

The main northern commuter route out of Christchurch was closed after the crash until 8.30pm, causing traffic delays.

Police are still yet to determine the cause of the crash.
