Nelson police have named the man killed when he was struck by a passing car on a highway on Sunday night.
He was Thomas Kochwasser, 40, of Redwood Valley. Kochwasser was a German national who had lived in New Zealand for many years.
His family in Germany have been advised of his death.
Kochwasser had parked alongside Moutere Highway, between Redwood Valley Rd and Greenacres Rd, about 6.20pm on Sunday.
Detective John Nicholls said they were "starting to get a clearer picture of what occurred" prior to his death, but it was too early to say definitively why he was on the highway at the time.
The stretch of road was straight, and would have been very dark at the time Kochwasser was hit, Nicholls said.
There was no indication Kochwasser was doing anything to his car, such as changing a tyre, that would have given him cause to be on the road at the time.
The driver of the vehicle that hit him was uninjured, but was receiving help from victim support.
Police thanked members of the public who had come forward with information relating to the incident and those who assisted at the scene.
The police serious crash unit investigation was ongoing, and the matter had been referred to the Coroner.
