Police are investigating a suspicious house fire in Christchurch overnight.

A Fire Service spokesman said the property in Andrews Cr, off Simoen St just south of Brougham St in Spreydon, caught fire just before 1am this morning.

He said the fire did not "take off", and burned only part of the outside of the house.

"It looks like it was arson," he said.

Fire safety investigators will be on the scene this morning.
